Chapter Presidents meet twice a year: November of the previous year for the Strategic Planning and June or July of the current year to evaluate on how much of the plans had been achieved. Chapter Presidents meet twice a year: November of the previous year for the Strategic Planning and June or July of the current year to evaluate on how much of the plans had been achieved. This year’s midyear meeting was held Jul 4-5 at the University Hotel UP Diliman. Focus was on the review of the Five Point thrust of the current administration. Keynote speaker on the first day was a high caliber speaker, Ms Christine Temblique, a past International Director (2001-2003) of the Toastmasters International. She talked about ‘Leading for Change’. Mr. Bien Lazaro of IMS, a globally known pharmaceutical information data center presented the 2007 last quarter local pharmaceutical review that includes the seismic shifts, growth rates of local pharmaceutical companies and his personal insights on the Universally Accessible Cheaper and Quality Medicines. Another speaker was Dr. Gary Sy representing his own company, Geriatrica, who tackled about coronary artery diseases and diabetes and a little on arthritis and the possible impact of food supplement on these diseases.

Aligning my article to this year’s DSAP convention theme “Reshaping Practices Towards Customer Healthcare,” I find myself asking what “Best Practices” are all about. ‘Best practice’ is the process of hunting for usable ideas and strategies from other businesses to improve performance and results in any given area. Big companies have been doing this for decades for the following reasons…

REDUCING COSTS - “Reinventing the wheel” isn’t an easy thing especially for smaller businesses that don’t typically have a research and development fund. By learning the success stories of others, a business does not have to spend a lot on testing new ideas. (Note:This kind of copying is the good kind, not the ‘pirated’ kind)

AVOIDING MISTAKES - Mistakes can be costly, thus learning from the mistakes of others makes suffering preventable.

FINDING FRESH IDEAS - This can have an energizing effect on operations. Improving Performance: When you look for best practices outside your business, wonderful thing happens. When your standards get elevated, there’s a boost in productivity and sales.

Steps For Best Practices

• Identify one business process or service to improve. (e.g. Customer service)
• Look for something to measure. (e.g. Number of customers/day or no. of purchased items/customer)
• Find competitors and companies within your industry and outside your industry. (e.g. leading drugstore)
• Collect information on the successful, best practices of other companies. (e.g.Jollibee or McDo)
• Modify the best practice for your situation. (e.g. Have one retail store per area act as central hub for shipments.)
• Implement the process then measure the results. Check out companies of all sizes. Try to apply as quickly as you can, then evaluate the results.

More importantly, have an open mind and try to get out of your comfort zone and make things happen. Wishing you the best in practicing your best.

She commended Dr. Villafuerte's vast experiences on community projects.Dr. Villafuerte referred us to Dr. Gil Vicente, the distinguished president of Phil. Society of Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery. (PSOHS). We were delighted when Dr. Vicente informed us that PSOHS had chapters in Bacolod and Cagayan de Oro. This cordial meeting paved the way for the budding partnership between DSAP and PSOHS. The DSAP Calendar project, as I have conceptualized in 2006, is now on its third run. Now headed by Ms. Tessie Dy, Ways & Means Director, and Ms. Abe Ochoa as Publications Director, the team searched for the most valuable beneficiaries for the project. Hence, our president Ms. Josephine Inocencio and Social Service Committee headed by Rodel Vizconde thought that the proceeds from DSAP calendar 2009 would best benefit the indigent patients in need of cleft lip and/or palate and ENT related surgeries.

The social service committee earmarked P150,000 as total funding for the surgeries of patients coming from NCR-Luzon, (Cavite, Quezon & Bulacan) with Manila Doctors Hospital (MDH) as the site of the mission. Aside from rendering free use of the hospital’s facilities, Metrobank foundation of MDH will also provide equivalent of P150,000 for this undertaking. We envisioned that at least 20 patients will beam with smiles after undergoing life-changing surgeries on August 24 and 31 of this year.

In Bacolod, DSAP Chapter President Jess Tan and his officers busied themselves coordinating with Dr. Ramon Arriola. Dr Arriola, PSOHS president for Western Visayas told us: “We will be reaching out to the poorest of the poor in Bacolod. In behalf of the patients, I want to thank your organization for this initiative.” Bacolod Chapter will be provided with P100,000 for this project. The surgeries will be held at Corazon Locsin Montelibo Memorial Regional Hospital (CLMMRH) Meanwhile, in Cagayan de Oro, National Director, Edu Alaba, together with their chapter President Purification Lucenara, meet regularly with Dr. Peter Tian. Dr. Tian is the renowned PSOHS president for Northern Mindanao. Dr. Tian’s team made arrangements with Maria Reyna Hospital, a private hospital run by Sisters of St. Paul for this outreach program on Aug 23, 2008. The total budget allocation for Cagayan de Oro Chapter is P100,000 which can help patients with a renewed sense of hope in life.

DSAP has brought sophistication to my drugstores. Six years ago, my drugstore used a software especially designed for the drugstore business used to monitor my inventory and sales. I commissioned a programmer, paid him a lump sum at the start of the project and a monthly service fee for two years. I spent quite a sum of money so that my drugstores will be more systematic in the operation compared to my neighbors. The software was simple, able to summarize the daily sales and gave me details of the inventory count. I was glad to have that “point of sales” software. However, every time the power fluctuates, the program crashed and I had to contact the programmer to repair the data. There were times when I felt that I was short-changed with the software I had when I began discovering that there were more reports I needed for further analysis.

With the help of DSAP’s think tanks, Mr. and Mrs. Armand Ablaza of Emilene’s Pharmacy, Mr. Rodel Vizconde of Marcelo’s Pharmacy, Ms. Celia Carlos and her staff, Carlos Super Drug, Mr. Phillip
Inocencio of PI Drug/Peralta Pharmacy, and consultations with many other DSAP members, the Integrated Drugstore Management System (IDMS) was conceived. The conceptualization of the program took a long time. EZ Soft Corporation was commissioned to do the project for a huge amount of money. That was a problem to tackle! DSAP thought of gathering investors to come up with the amount – with P50,000 investment from 50 investors, the amount would be sufficient to pay for the software. The IDMS was a work in progress and tested among several drugstores. Then it was ready for use by other subscribers.

DSAP formed a technical team last February 2008 to make sure that current subscribers are satisfied with the system. They will also make sure that new subscribers will be able to use the system with ease and so with the payment. With a staggered payment of P10,000, P10,000 and P8,000 or a total of P28,000, the subscriber gets a CD installer, installation, 12-hour training, 6 hours of consultation over the telephone for one year, basic item master list, and a simplified manual (still being made). The upgrades can be sent to subscribers by email.
